What you are installing
One application, not a folder of loose files you have to keep in order yourself.
A single patcher
The install gives you one program, the DefiantScape patcher. There is no separate launcher to find and no shortcut that stops working after an update. You open the patcher, it gets you into the game.
Updates handle themselves
Every launch it checks the update manifest and downloads only the files that changed since your last session. A content update is usually a few seconds, not another full download. The patcher can update itself too.
Always the current build
The game files ship encrypted and are only unpacked when you press play, so there is no way to start an old client by accident and land in a version the server no longer speaks to. Everyone is on the same build.
Revision 236
The client runs on Old School revision 236, so the interface, controls and rendering are what you already know. What differs is the content on the server, not how the game feels to play.
One account, both places
The account you make here is the account you log in with in game. The same credentials work on this site for the hiscores and your dashboard.
What it costs you
383 MB to download and around 1.5 GB installed. Nothing runs in the background when you are not playing, and uninstalling is a matter of deleting the install folder.

Common questions
Is DefiantScape free to play?
Yes. The client is free to download and the game is free to play. There is no pay-to-win store and no subscription.
Why does Windows warn about an unknown publisher?
The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen warns about any publisher it does not recognise. Choose More info and then Run anyway. If you would rather check first, compare the file against the SHA-256 checksum above. That tells you it is byte-for-byte the file we published.
Do I have to download updates myself?
No. The installer includes the patcher, which checks for updates on every launch and downloads only the files that changed.
My antivirus flagged the download. Is that normal?
It happens with unsigned game launchers, because they patch and start other executables, which looks unusual to heuristic scanners. Verify the checksum above; if it matches, the file is exactly what we published.
Is there a macOS or Linux client?
Not yet. Windows is the only supported platform today. Both builds are in progress and the Discord announces them first.
The download is slow or keeps stopping.
The file supports resuming, so a download manager can pick up where it left off. If it stalls repeatedly, try a different network; some providers throttle large archive downloads.
